This weekend, from 12 to 15 May, Ajdovščina was supposed to host the Roman Days with a rich programme, but the event has been cancelled due to bad weather. The organisers expect the Roman Days to take place in the autumn of this year.

Kastra Roman Fortress

Romans in the Vipava Valley

The organisers of the event want to present the history of the area and to link the present with the past. In the Roman era, the main roads connecting the important towns of the time ran through the Vipava Valley. Ajdovščina is also home to the Roman-era Castra Fortress, which was built as early as 270 AD. Ajdovščina then developed over the years within the fortress and became an important centre throughout history.

The Roman Days were intended to show visitors the role of Roman culture in the Vipava Valley and to relive history. The varied events would include a presentation of Roman life in the camp, Roman food preparation, soldier training, various ancient board games and workshops for children, processions of soldiers and gladiators, a demonstration of catapult shooting, a concert of ancient music, a gladiator fight and a reenactment of the famous Battle of the Frost River.

This event is a truly exceptional opportunity to go back in time and experience the Roman way of life. Unfortunately, due to the bad weather forecast, the event has been cancelled, but the rich events will certainly come to life in the autumn.
