The area is ideal for wine growing as it has a mix of Mediterranean and Continental climates, meaning that the winters are mild and summers are quite hot and dry. These favourable conditions are the reason why the wines of the Vipava Valley are renowned for their quality, as the grapes are full of aromas and flavours derived from the karst soils and the specific climate.
Wine growing in the Vipava Valley has a long tradition and history, and the love of wine production has been passed down from generation to generation. The first vines are believed to have been planted in the area by the Romans, and today the Vipava Valley is home to more than 20,000 hectares of vineyards stretching across the steep terrain between the Vipava and Soča rivers.

The Vipava Valley also has a large variety of indigenous wine varieties. Zelèn is particularly important, with records dating back as far as 1844. Some of the other old indigenous varieties that winemakers have managed to preserve are Pinela, Klarnica, Pergulin, Pikolit, Poljšakica.
